- Many people are unaware that all magnetic media will
eventually deteriorate to the point where it will no longer play back with a
satisfactory picture.
- There are many variables; but it is inevitable that it will
happen.
- I have a 20 year old recording of our children at Christmas
time. Back then, I was one of the first with the amazing video recording
equipment. I recently noticed that the details in the picture are getting more
and more blurry. That means that the high frequency component of the video
signal is starting to go away.
- The deterioration begins with the high frequency part of
the video signal and eventually you would probably end up with a blob of color
here and there. The sound may become garbled and loose it's fidelity,
depending on whether or not it was recorded in HiFi.
- Recording your videos onto DVD will halt the signal
degradation. It won't make it better than what it is right now; but it will
"lock" it into the best that you have right now.
- It is said that a well cared for DVD or CD will last a 100
years!
- For you technically minded or just plain curious folks, I
have a link right here that should answer most or all of your questions. This
page has a link to the DVD FAQ.
